How to choose financial research data in 2026
A practical checklist for historical market and public-source data: coverage, timestamps, survivorship bias, licence, sample and delivery format.
The useful question is not just where to download a file. It is whether that file covers the securities and dates you need, represents the information available at the time, and permits your intended use. Evaluate those points before building a backtest around it.
Start with the research task
Write down the instrument universe, frequency, start and end dates, update cadence, required columns and delivery format. A daily OHLCV file is different from a point-in-time constituent history; the latter matters if your backtest should include companies that later left an index. For that task, inspect the index constituent membership history alongside the S&P 500 price history.
Six checks before you use a dataset
- Source and rights. Identify the original source, its redistribution terms, and the licence for your own use.
- Time coverage. Confirm the first and last real observation, not only the date range in a title.
- Point-in-time behavior. Ask whether later corrections overwrite historical rows and whether delisted names remain in the universe.
- Sample and schema. Inspect field names, units, missing values and a few actual rows before integrating it.
- Freshness. Compare the last observation with the advertised update cadence and the task's latency requirement.
- Delivery. Check whether a static file is enough or whether the workflow needs a maintained API or stream.
Use the free catalogue as a test bench
dAgentBase currently lists free financial and public-source datasets, including 13F holdings, index history and ECB series. Each listing shows a sample, source, licence and computed quality checks. Those checks measure structure and freshness; they do not guarantee factual accuracy or suitability for a trading strategy.
Open the catalogue, inspect a listing, then use the quickstart to claim and download it. If the required coverage is missing, describe the exact data need through support; those requests guide which independent producers we recruit next.
