4,117 failed or assisted insured institutions (3,524 failures and 593 assistance transactions) in 54 states and territories, 1934 to 2026: every commercial bank, savings bank and savings association resolved by the FDIC, the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation or the Resolution Trust Corporation, with FDIC certificate number, name, city and state, the effective date the institution ceased to be a privately held going concern, the insurance fund that bore the loss (FDIC, FSLIC, RTC, BIF, SAIF or DIF), whether the case was a failure or an assistance transaction, the resolution transaction type as the FDIC codes it (A/A assistance, P&A, PA and PI purchase and assumption, IDT insured deposit transfer, PO payout, MGR FSLIC management takeover, REP reprivatisation, plus ABT, DINB and OBAM), the charter class (N national bank, SM state Fed-member bank, NM state non-member bank, SB savings bank, SA savings association and the older savings-institution codes SL, SI and MI), total assets and deposits from the last report filed before the effective date and the estimated loss to the fund, all in thousands of US dollars, and the FIN number of the receivership or assistance agreement. Certificate numbers are blank for most cases before 1950 and a few later ones, estimated losses where the FDIC publishes none (most FDIC cases before 1986, FSLIC cases before 1989 and the 2008–09 systemic-risk assistance transactions) and FIN numbers where none was assigned. From the FDIC BankFind Suite failures API as of 2026-09-06.

Use Cases

  • Banking-crisis and failure-wave research
  • Deposit-insurance loss modelling
  • Bank-resolution and charter-class comparisons
  • Regional bank-stress context

Methodology

Single fetch of the BankFind Suite failures endpoint (api.fdic.gov/banks/failures, the target of the banks.data.fdic.gov/api redirect) for the certificate, name, location, date, fund, resolution, transaction, charter, balance-sheet, loss and FIN fields; M/D/YYYY dates converted to ISO; nulls and the placeholder FIN 0 blanked; sorted by failure date and name. Code meanings follow the FDIC's failure_properties field documentation.

Update Schedule

Static snapshot. The FDIC adds failures as they occur (usually on Friday evenings) and revises estimated losses periodically; refresh weekly.
